My name is Severiano Guevara, I was born in Morelia, Michoacán, México. I completed middle school in México. I studied at the University of Oregon, Eugene for my G.E.D. I studied at the Salinas Adult School for my High School Diploma and I graduated in 2013. Next, I earned my A.A at Hartnell College. Now I am working on my B.A in Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures at CSUMB.
Spanish Language
At the age of 32 years old, I did not have dreams, my dreams had disappeared completely. I only wanted to complete my high school because I had trouble with the English language. I graduated from Salinas Adult School in 2013. After, I was not sure about continuing studies in community college. First, I made an appointment with a counselor at Hartnell College and he made me a study plan that included Spanish. When I took my first class in Spanish I, I liked the Spanish class a lot and I decided to become a Spanish professor and regained my dreams come again and I decide to become a Spanish professor and shifted my emphasis to the Spanish program. The Hartnell counselor explained about the process to become a professor. I know is a long process, but with my completed A.A from Hartnell, now I am working on the B.A. at CSUMB. Following CSUMB, I want to continue working on a Masters Degree. I have plans to transfer to San Jose State University continue with my Spanish classes and finally the Doctorate because my goal is teaching at a California university, for example at CSUMB.
Learned at CSUMB
Fall 2017 is my first semester at CSUMB, I have four classes in my first semester including: Spanish 301, 304, 306, and WLC 300. In my first semester in my first class I began with literature classes. Honestly I don't have experience with literature, but I like the narrative and poems and I like the interpretation of the narrative and poems. My second class is about Latino Culture, in this class I learned about the cultures from México to Argentina. I learned that in America there are 20 countries that speak Spanish. For each country we are studying about the culture, people, territory, economy, government, and more. We were studying Aztec, Maya, and when Christopher Columbus came for the first time to America. For the class 301s something I like the class is the participation in Service Learning to the community. I made my community service at "Escuela Libertad" onside Hebbron Family Center in Salinas, California. I had approximately eight students, the want become American Citizens. I teaching to the student with 100 questions of history and N-400. My students are hard workers, most of them worked in agriculture, and I'm proud of them. I understood my students because I worked in agriculture and very hard stay working in agriculture and be a student.
For the class WLC 300 I had the opportunity learned about projects to future for example for next year I will working in Capstone project for me is a challenge project. Now I’m working in my e-portfolio, the professor Gus is help us to complete the project, another important when we had the orientation about the student that study in another country. Finally, something that enjoyed and was important for me, when we visited the field trip to MIIS, is very nice place for the students that want be interpreter in the future.
