SPAN 303 - Adv Spanish Grammar, SPAN 313 - Intro to Spanish Linguistics, SPAN 315 - Introduction to Translation: Spanish/English, SPAN 345: Bilingualism in the Spanish-Speaking World
SPAN 303 - Adv Spanish Grammar First, for the SPAN 303 grammar class in all languages it is very important when writing and speaking. In this short paragraph I will focus only on the grammar in Spanish and English. On the other hand, the grammar in Spanish is a little different from the grammar in English. On the other hand, grammar in Spanish can be interpreted as many formal. One of the reasons that Spanish is a "Romance language" then we can write or speak more widely. I have also seen conjugation of the verbs that cause the most problems to people who are learning Spanish and to Spanish-Speaking people. For example: I saw the imperfect, undefined, perfect past. One of the things that I liked this grammar class, we worked as a team and had to read readings for example: Agueda, Réquiem con tostadas and El amor en los tiempos de Skype. I loved readings these histories but the one I liked the most was Réquiem con tostadas because it talks about domestic violence that a woman suffers and in the end she decided suicide because she can no longer bear the abuse of her husband. Therefore I had to discuss in class and write sentences. Like new vocabulary is learned that are spoken in different regions of Latin America. Finally, for me it was important to register in this class, I speak Spanish, but the class helped me a lot because I had already forgotten part of the grammar in Spanish. Finally, it helped me because I want to be a Spanish teacher in the future and professor gave me methods to learn grammar in Spanish easier.
SPAN 313 - Intro to Spanish Linguistics. In the linguistic class I learned the "morphology, syntax, phonology, semantics, pragmatics, dialectology, neurolinguistics". I also saw other important things in linguistics. One of the things that I have learned in class is the different ways of speaking between Latinos and some regions of Spain. For this kind of "Introduction of Spanish in the Linguist". Different groups assigned by Professor Oliva. My group was assigned "Spanish and English in contact" within the United States. " Interesting theme assigned to group. One reason that both languages are in contact Spanish and English, with English there are loan words and vice versa, there are also words borrowed from Spanish, It was a group of five classmate. Each one was a division of the subject, some explained "lexicon, morphology, syntax, and code-switching or alternation of languages. I am interested in this topic for the reason that it is a community we are with both languages, with the official language that is English and the native language that is Spanish. Another interesting thing was the "Spanglish" research that we can see Spanish and English are in contact with English and Spanish. Some examples of words are: "troca, bil, birria, lonche, map, watchear and more". Something that caught my attention was that a classmate, her first language is English, for her it was something new to be in contact with "Spanglish" and with "Alternation of languages or code-switching". Finally we could see the different phonemes of other countries. The interesting thing was how they speak in the south of Spain, they speak very fast. In class we had the honor of having a classmate from Spain, she explained a topic about the Iberian Peninsula. It is always very interesting to learn phonemes from other countries.
SPAN 315 - Introduction to Translation: Spanish/EnglishSpanish class 315 Introduction to Spanish-English translation. First, I think it was easy to translate from English to Spanish or vice versa. At the beginning of the semester I learned in the class the different "strategies", "techniques", "procedures" and "methods". Later, I worked in class translating articles that the teacher gave us in class because most time I worked with a team. Then, I learned that we make a very big mistake that when translated "linear" and what we should do “literally.” When I did the translation, "literally" gives another meaning to the translation and in doing it. An example when I translating a song from Spanish to English was translated "letter by letter" in other words "linear translation". The song did not sound good and the translation does not look good. Now I understand that I must make a translation literally. Sometimes the translation is not easy, an example the sayings, the poems, the songs or also what we can see in the movies. For example: Holy cow! The student when translating The translation "vaca sagrada", but the best translation is "My God!". Students get confused when they learn a new language one confused are the “cognates” or “fake friends” for example: 1. school, college, university. 2. success, exit, exit. Anotere example, if an American wants to learn Spanish, they also have to learn from the Latino culture. Therefore, the professor facilitated us and gave us tools for a good translation. Now in these times it is easier to translate an article.
The advice given by the teacher a first read and write or mark the words we do not understand, then look in a good dictionary for example: "WordReference" another advise that the profesor mention not using Google Translate for the reason that Google Translation do “translates linear.” Finally, translation is not an easy task I had many difficulties but with the strategies I learned in class now it is a bit easier for me to translate and also thanks to the advice and the dictionary that he advised us to make a professional translation . Finally, it is difficult to translate but at the same time it is fun because you learn from different cultures or how to say some words in different countries.
SPAN 345: The bilingualism class, in my mind it happened that we only had to speak Spanish and English in the United States. But I got a big surprise. The class was very deep and interesting and something surprising is brain is important for our language. I saw some videos of people, bilingual, multilingual. and monolingual people who do not care more than just their first language. We had the opportunity to interview bilingual person in the community. Fortunately, I have some friends who emigrated to the United States, one of whom speaks Polish, English and now Spanish. Another is from South Korea, he also speaks Korean, English and also Spanish. In that interview the goal was if people made the “code-switching”. Of my three interviewees, there was a “code switching”. I think it's natural to “code switching”, for people who are exposed to two languages. Finally, we had a presentation as a team, our theme was "The traditional dialects and the Southeast" the exciting thing about the research is the way of speaking of the people who live on the border between Mexico and the United States. Also interesting is that also live in different kinds of languages of Latin America and some regions of Spain. Something surprising, I never imagined that linguistics led to studies of the different dialects of Mexico, especially in small towns. I loved the class, for the reason we could know the way of speaking of other people from other countries.
