SPAN 306: My second class is about Latino Culture, in this class I learned about the cultures from México to Argentina. I learned that in America there are 20 countries that speak Spanish. For each country we are studying about the culture, people, territory, economy, government, and more. We were studying Aztec, Maya, and when Christopher Columbus came for the first time to America. On class 304. I have the opportunity to work with my team about the two island the "Antillas Mayores" the project were about Dominic Republic and Puerto Rico. Something I learned about the politics system of both island, I focus more in Puerto Rico. I had the opportunity to study that Puerto Rico is only on United State territory. My acknowledge or opinion is Puerto Rico would be one more state for the United. Puerto Rico is a great island, rich in sugar cane and tourist, the United State benefit of this natural recourse that is sugar cane. I would like know more about the class, probably reading more book about the Latin cultures, visit Latin museum. One of my goal is visit the Chichen Itza pyramids because the Mayas were great astronomers and visit the Machu Picchu, the Incas were great imperial and have a lot to know about them. One of the song I love it is the "El Condor Pasa." Other important experience that talked about culture were amazing when I presented some poems about Mexican culture is "Día de los Muertos." On past I visited one commentary where are some family. For this tradition I will visit Patzcuaro, Michoacan.
SPAN 321: Course Reflective NarrativeIn the Spanish literature class we could see the time from the Middle Ages and the time of the Catholic Monarchs, Principles of Modernity or Golden Age. The eighteenth century, The Enlightenment, The nineteenth century: From Romanticism to Naturalism until the twentieth century and twenty-one. In all these times we could see the writers and the name of the novels. We read stories, essays, plays and poems protagonists of the stories. In some of the works we could see that some are anonymous because we do not know who wrote them and not necessarily because of the censorship.
It is the first time I study part of Spanish literature, I have read some novels and poems by Spanish writers, but in class we had the opportunity to learn about the lives of the authors and their works. We also work in class and analyze some of the writers' works. First, in a group of three or more. After the class discussed the most important points. The activities within the class helped me to remember the works and some of the authors' biographies. In the class the teacher did an activity in the Spanish building. In each room he gave a name and the name of the work. It is a good strategy to remember the names and titles of the writings.
I honestly believed that Spanish literature was going to be boring, I had heard what was boring, but Spain is the cradle of literature. I thought it would be difficult because of the vocabulary, it uses an old vocabulary, but the good thing is that at the bottom of the page is the word with the meaning. We can see different styles of Spanish literature, dramatic works, nostalgic, rebellious or comical. Something that caught my attention for a long time, there were already many people against the Catholic religion. The censorship that was against writers who expressed their thoughts, that they were not in accordance with religion, the Catholic Church has a lot of power, people began to express themselves and to make fun of by means of or through street plays, speeches or poetry.
I liked quite a few novels, poems and theater. The one I identified with was Lazarillo de Tormes. Lazarillo had to pass many injustices with his masters and had to do many things to survive the abuses of the masters where they had him under his control, the need to eat led him to do things he never imagined. Stealing out of necessity, the selfish masters who only exploited him without feeding him, I'm glad he took revenge on them, it was a justified revenge. From the blind and the cleric. He had more masters, the last master, also uses it to cover his sin with the lover, the father tells him that he must marry and introduces him to his lover, a beautiful woman but first he does not want Lazarillo, but finally she feels something for Lazarillo He realizes that the wife is still the father's lover. But the wife being caught and taken to court, she realizes that she loves him or feels a fondness for Lazarillo.
I liked the class, honestly, I thought it was going to be a boring class for the reason that it is Spanish literature. I had not had the opportunity to study and read so many authors from Spain, only some authors. I would like to learn a little more about Spanish literature, I would like to know the old vocabulary that was spoken in Spain. The question I have about Spanish literature are many, for the moment I want to know about the writers more important in Spain, I really liked the readings, stories, poems. I liked them for the reason that each story, play or poems, how interesting each writing has its message. As in class we had the opportunity to search the main topics and know a little about the author and his works. For me it will be a challenge to read and understand Don Quixote, I only had the opportunity to read a little and watch a video, Don Quixote will be one of my preferences. Also another interesting poem since I read it and analyzed it, but not completely and I will also try to analyze it again is the poem "Song of the pirate" by the Spanish author, José de Espronceda. The little I could analyze of the poem "Song of the pirate" as the theme "freedom" I see that we are free to think for oneself, for example, in education, I am free to choose the career that I want, because I like it and because I know it will give me satisfaction. One is the "Pirate" of his own ship, we can study where it is easier or where we like "Asia on one side, on the other Europe." Do not be afraid of the career we have chosen, it is nice to know, " Sail, sailboat of mine, without fear. "I interpreted it that way and I want to know a little more about this poem. When I saw the "Thousand years of Spanish literature" I thought that I was only going to talk about the kings of Spain and the life of the monarchy. But they mention low-level people, as we can see in "Lazarillo de Tormes" you can learn from a moral, you learn to mature, you learn as you say colloquially with the blows of life. As you can see, I would like to know the main themes of the plays, poems and essays. As I mentioned before also vocabulary, I think with the page of the Royal Spanish Academy. That is going to be quite useful for those of us who want to know more about Spanish literature. Because it's quite interesting.
Finally, the connections between this class and the other one, in its class we only focus on writers or Spanish authors and another class that I am also working see authors Spanish people. Previously, we had already studied Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, José de Espronceda. Another connection, I do not know if it is correct, but there are many Latin American authors or writers whose influence was to travel and work in Spain. Because there they were, Spain is the cradle of literature. I was in class 304 and there are connections with the literature class in Spain. Another connection we saw some plays on video. But in your class you provided a lot of material and it was a bit easier to understand Spanish literature. An example: in "Yes of the girls, Don Quixote and Juan Tenorio." I would continue writing more of Spanish literature. Also in another class we worked on the search of the main topics of Latin American literature and we made analysis of the novels, stories, essays and more. Also, in other classes we saw the biography of Spanish writers. So sometimes it is easier to understand some authors, because many talk about their experiences in life, love, lack of love, criticism of the government. What I liked about the class that gave us another way of learning and the name of the works, novels, essays and could not miss the name of the writers or authors. I hope and I do not know the last time I took a Spanish literature class. It would be interesting to learn from the most important authors and then travel to Spain to learn a little more about the Spanish culture. I would also like to know that, if you ever have questions about Spanish literature feel free to ask, you are an expert in the field of Spanish literature. I will add my presentation of the "El pirata" we describe the poem with my classmate. In the presentation we include music and my classmate include a personal story that she live for six months in the see.
SPAN 365: It's the first time I had the "Chicano Literature" class. For the class we had to read about eight novels by Chicano writers. All the novels I liked, one of the novels "Blood in the desert" that refers to dead women in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. The novel is about a girl who is kidnapped and if her sister does not rescue her, she was going to be a murderer. Also, we can see in the novel, the murdered women, are women of low resources, who sounded a better life. Unfortunately, they were not very lucky and were first raped and murdered. To accompany the reading were several documentaries of real events, these documentaries are not fiction is the reality that is living on the border between Mexico and the United States. Another very strong thing that we saw in the documentaries, that same government is involved in this painful tragedy. For the reason that they were young girls and could have a long life. Changing also we saw documentaries of the Chicano movement. Thanks to the protesting students they had more rights, before they were considered "vagos" Latinos, but at that time, everyone had the right to study and get ahead. Other novels that I could enjoy were "Pocho, Across the mountains, Bendice Ultima, House of mango street". I read all book in Spanish. Because is my first language. With the "Casa de Mango Street" reminded me of the neighborhood when I was a kid. You know all the neighbors and you know how they are, it also reminded me of my childhood friends. Finally, another novel that I loved, "And did not swallow the earth" was very funny, for the reason that the child is telling the stories that are happening in his can. Very interesting to know a bit of Chicano literature.
